Best Fitness Tracker Without Subscription: What You Get Without Monthly Fees

The best fitness tracker without subscription is the one that keeps the features you actually want available after any trial ends. That is a more useful test than checking whether a brand sells a premium plan somewhere in its app.

Our research-based shortlist starts with Amazfit Helio Strap for screen-free tracking, Polar Loop for a screen-free Polar Flow option, and Garmin vívosmart 5 for a slim band with a display. Each takes a different approach, so we would choose by how you want to view your data before comparing extra features.

Research method: we checked manufacturer product pages, manuals, subscription explanations and Amazon US listings on October 20, 2026. We have not performed hands-on sensor, sleep or battery testing. Recommendations are buying analysis, not measured accuracy rankings.

Choose the format and app you will use, then verify that your must-have features remain available without a paid plan. No required subscription does not mean every optional service is free.

Quick comparison: three fitness trackers without a required monthly plan

Tracker Best reason to shortlist Subscription distinction Main tradeoff
Amazfit Helio Strap Screen-free activity and recovery tracking Core Zepp insights do not require a monthly subscription; optional services exist No display for checking stats on your wrist
Polar Loop Screen-free tracking with Polar Flow Polar markets the current Loop as a one-time purchase with its features included Reviewing your data relies on the app or web service
Garmin vívosmart 5 A slim display-equipped band Core Garmin Connect features are free; Connect+ adds optional features Connected GPS uses your phone

“Without subscription” here means no required recurring plan for the core tracking experience described below. It does not mean every extra service, accessory or third-party integration is free forever.

1. Amazfit Helio Strap: our screen-free starting point

Amazfit explicitly says Helio Strap provides training, recovery, health and performance insights through the Zepp app without a required monthly subscription. Its US product page lists continuous heart-rate tracking, live heart-rate broadcast and up to 10 days of battery life.

That makes it a sensible starting point if you want a band collecting information in the background and prefer checking the results on your phone. A missing display can be a benefit if notifications distract you, but a limitation if you want to glance at your pace or workout stats without reaching for another device.

What is optional? The wider Zepp ecosystem includes paid services. For example, Zepp Aura offers an optional premium tier for additional sleep and relaxation content and guidance. That is different from requiring a plan to access Helio Strap’s core insights.

Our take: shortlist it for the screen-free format and stated subscription policy, not a promise that it measures heart rate more accurately than the alternatives. We have not compared sensor performance directly. Also check that you are buying the complete Helio Strap, rather than a replacement band, charging dock or a different Helio model.

2. Polar Loop: for screen-free tracking with Polar Flow

The current Polar Loop is a screen-free band launched in 2025, not the older Loop with a display. Polar describes it as a one-time purchase with its features available without monthly fees. It tracks heart rate, sleep and activity and works with Polar Flow for reviewing information.

Polar’s documentation includes sleep stages, a sleep score and Nightly Recharge overnight recovery information. The manufacturer specifies up to 8 days of battery life. Those figures and features explain why it belongs on the shortlist; they do not establish how well it will match your own sleep or recovery experience.

Why choose it? If you already understand and like Polar Flow, staying with that presentation may be more useful than switching for another proprietary recovery score. If you are new to both apps, compare how each explains trends and training before choosing the hardware.

Why skip it? You want time, notifications or live workout information on a wrist display. This is a deliberate screen-free design, not a small smartwatch. Check that the listing is the current screen-free Loop, since the reused product name can cause confusion.

3. Garmin vívosmart 5: for a slim band with a screen

Vívosmart 5 combines a small OLED touchscreen with a physical button. Garmin lists activity and sleep tracking, Body Battery energy monitoring and connected GPS. It quotes up to 7 days of battery life, excluding Pulse Ox sleep tracking.

The GPS distinction matters: connected GPS uses a compatible phone. If you want to leave your phone at home and record an outdoor route independently, choose a device with built-in GPS instead. A subscription-free app does not add hardware the band lacks.

Does Garmin require a subscription? Garmin Connect+ is an optional premium tier. When Garmin introduced it, the company stated that existing Connect features and data would remain free. You do not need Connect+ merely because the brand offers it; check whether a particular premium feature you want is supported by this older band.

Our take: consider vívosmart 5 when a discreet display and Garmin’s existing app appeal to you. Do not buy it expecting a modern full-size AMOLED watch or every feature in Garmin’s current range. Compare the current offer carefully, because an older tracker is not automatically the best value.

What does “subscription-free” actually include?

Before ordering, make a short list of the information you want to see: daily steps, exercise history, sleep trends, a recovery estimate, route recording or a training plan. Then check each item against the manufacturer’s current free-versus-paid explanation.

A tracker can meet the requirement for someone who only wants activity and sleep logs while failing it for someone who specifically wants premium coaching. Both buyers may describe their goal as “no subscription,” but they are asking for different things.

Use this cost check: purchase price + any membership you actually need over your expected ownership period + accessories you intend to buy. Do not count an optional plan as compulsory, and do not count a temporary trial as permanently free.

We avoid fixed deal prices and long-term savings promises here. Amazon offers, seller conditions and software services can change. Confirm the selected product, condition and current offer before checkout.

Can you use Fitbit without a subscription?

Separate basic tracking from the full premium experience. Google’s Charge 6 page lists heart rate, steps, distance, calories and exercise modes, while also promoting paid Google Health Premium services and other subscription-dependent features.

Our advice is to decide which feature matters before buying. Do not assume that a trial unlocks everything permanently, or that the existence of Premium makes all tracking unusable without payment. Check the current feature description for your device, app version and region.

We have kept Fitbit out of the main three-product shortlist because this guide prioritizes a straightforward no-required-membership purchase. Readers already using Fitbit may reasonably prefer keeping their existing device and reviewing which features they use before switching.

How to choose between a screen-free band and a display

  • Choose screen-free if you want background collection and are comfortable checking the app later.
  • Choose a display if time and a quick look at activity stats matter during the day.
  • Choose built-in GPS if phone-free route recording is essential; do not confuse it with connected GPS.
  • Prioritize an app you understand over a longer list of scores you will rarely use.

If your priority is running rather than a slim activity band, our Garmin Forerunner 165 review covers a watch-based alternative. For everyday running audio, see our running earbuds guide for small ears.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a screenless fitness tracker with no subscription?

Yes. Amazfit Helio Strap and the current Polar Loop are two options whose manufacturers explicitly describe a no-required-subscription experience. Compare the included features rather than assuming both apps work identically.

Do all fitness trackers require a subscription?

No. Required memberships, optional premium plans and free core tracking are different business models. Check the model and the specific feature you want, rather than making the decision from the brand name alone.

Is Garmin Connect+ necessary for vívosmart 5?

No for its core Garmin Connect tracking experience. Connect+ is an optional service, and device compatibility varies by premium feature.

Does subscription-free mean the tracker works without a phone?

No. An app, account or compatible phone can still be required for setup, syncing or reviewing data. Check those requirements separately from payment requirements.

Our recommendation

Start with Helio Strap if you want screen-free tracking through Zepp, Polar Loop if Polar Flow and its included insights appeal to you, or vívosmart 5 if a slim screen-equipped Garmin band is the priority. Our strongest recommendation is to verify your must-have features first: avoiding a monthly bill only helps if the device also does the job you bought it for.
